Driving research from bench to bedside, the NIHR is the world’s most integrated clinical research organisation. Focusing on patient and public needs, its overarching goal is to improve the United Kingdom’s health and wealth, whilst keeping the nation at the forefront of international research.

Business Need

Over 650,000 patients took part in UK clinical trials in 2017 and this figure is rising annually. Without patients, health research would be impossible. NIHR sought to not only attract new participants but also better engage with existing patients to foster ongoing involvement with them and to convey thanks to them.


Kicking off with a fast-paced Experience Definition, Concentrix Tigerspike worked closely with patient focus groups to gain a grassroots understanding of their needs and drivers. With time being a factor, the team developed native iOS and Android apps with middleware hosted on AWS. The impact of the applications is tracked using Concentrix Tigerspike’s Intelligence product.


In just a short project spanning 9 weeks, NIHR's vision to become digitally enabled is already one step closer: this pilot app is one of the springboard projects integral to that journey. Engaging existing users and helping them identify additional studies they may wish to participate in, the apps help shape future clinical trial participation as NIHR’s digital strategy is rolled out.
